2012 Bulletin Contest

This is just to let you all know that there will be a bulletin contest
this year for those who published at least six different editions of
their chapter bulletin in the year 2011. However, there are some
changes that are taking place.

As of our annual meeting last year, the district BETY contests were at
least temporarily done away with, mostly due to lack of participation
in the last few years. Instead, everyone will be eligible to compete
in the IBC. Additionally, there will not be separate contests for
hardcopy and electronic bulletins. These will all be judged in the
same contest under the same rules. That means that Layout &
Reproduction and Design & Graphics will be folded into one taking into
account differences in how they are published.

New Bulletin VP Jerry Daiker and I are working on updating the contest
rules and information to be published on the PROBE website. As soon as
possible, we will have that information for all to see. In the
meantime, if you have questions feel free to contact either Jerry
<jerrybbs@aol.com> or me .

Start getting your bulletins in order to submit to Lowell Shank, IBC
Chairman <lowell.shank@wku.edu> by April 1, 2012. You will need two
consecutive publications in a printed format, even if it is
electronically published, for the ease of the judges who need to mark
up copies.

Posting of the PROBEmotor on the website

It has been suggested that it may be time to change the practice of putting the current issue of the PROBEmotor in summary fashion for all to see, but then having the past issues in a “Members Only” section. Is this reaching the maximum viewership or should all issues be available for downloading to all?

Job Description / SOP for Bulletin Editors

As promised, here is the question that was posed by Christopher Baker on PROBEmail. It really is though provoking as I look at it. Anyway, her it is:

Does anyone have job descriptions/SOP for bulletin editors at
the District or Chapter level?

Notice he is not asking for what goes into a bulletin/newsletter, but what qualifications are needed to be a bulletin editor, what duties the editor is to perform–all of what is required of an editor. If someone comes to you and asks if you have a chapter bulletin and if not could he/she publish one, do we automatically say yes, or are there qualifications that go into being an editor?

Think back to when and how you were chosen to be a bulletin editor and let the discussion begin!

Another Giant Lost

It is with great sadness that we convey the loss of another great bulletin editor, PROBE member & officer, bulletin judge, and super organizer.

On Tuesday morning, April 13, 2010, Dick Girvin passed away. Dick had been in the hospital for a few days after suffering a minor heart attack, and other health issues.

As most know Dick was the Secretary/Treasurer of PROBE, having also served in other capacities. He was a judge in Layout & Reproduction and Design & Graphics and the category specialist for L&R. Dick was also the Secretary and chief organizer for the Far Western District. Just recently he was also serving on the influential Governance and Bylaws committee of the Society.

Memorial Service for Dick will be on Monday, April 19th.

Although we will all miss Dick, we also know that he is another voice in the heavenly choir, but more than that, he is organizing things in the way he knows so well.

Owen Herndon – Rest In Peace

This came in an email to President Steve Jackson. I would like to share it with all of you. Owen was not only one of our fine chapter editors, but also a fine judge. He will be greatly missed.

Steve,

I regret to inform you that, my dad, Owen Herndon passed away early Wednesday morning. He suffered what the doctors are calling a “cardiac episode” Sunday morning, and he never regained consciousness.

It is my duty to now see that the final issue of Tumblewords goes to press. He was almost done, it looks like there is relatively little for me to do. After a first assessment, only one page is missing…and i dont find a calender of events, so that may correct itself. There are a few incomplete pages, that seem to need a cartoon or whatever. I do see that he fully intended to enter the competition this year and I will see that his wish gets fulfilled. Problem is I dont know who to send it to, where to find the rules and the deadlines, etc. I am hoping you can stear me in the right direction there…for the RMD and the Intenational as well. I think the RMD one is supposed to be sent in this month is it not?

In anycase, I thank you for all the help you have given my father over the last few years. He thought of you with highest regard.

Steve Jackson Back and In Charge!

If you didn’t see Steve’s email to the PROBElist, here it is for all to see. He is back and operating at semi-full strength. He has now taken over the duties of editor of the PROBEmotor and as president of PROBE. Let’s all get behind a former shadow of himself and support him in whatever way we can.

Got home from the rehab center tonight, Dec. 14 — healthier, moving around, and 75 pounds lighter. Thanks to all for your good wishes and inquires — I’m convinced that “the man upstairs” heard your positive vibes for my health. I’m going to take it easy for the rest of the year, then slowly resume both editor jobs (PROBEmoter and RMD) as well as 2010 PROBE presidency.

Many thanks to John Elving for “taking up the slack!” I appreciate it very much.
